Our passionate and enthusiastic volunteers play an incredibly important part in the operation of the museum. They bring the experience to life for visitors, sail and maintain the fleet of heritage vessels, and promote the museum and New Zealand's maritime history in their communities.
In return, volunteers have the satisfaction of making an enjoyable and rewarding contribution to the museum, as well as learning new skills and meeting new people along the way.
We currently have more than 150 volunteers working in a variety of areas, including:
• Sailing crew / Steam Engineer
• Visitor host
• Tour guide
• Model Maker
• Library Assistant
• Vessel maintenance crew
• Education Host
• Collections and Exhibitions
Why we Need Volunteers
Volunteers play an incredibly important part in bringing the Museum experience alive for visitors. They help sail and care for our heritage vessels. Guide people through the Museum and support our visitors, education programmes and events. As passionate ambassadors of New Zealand’s maritime story, they are the lifeblood of the Museum.
We are always looking for volunteers and depending on what’s available and the role you choose, all we require is a commitment of 3 hours/one day for a week/fortnight for at least 3 – 6 months. We also would be happy for you to become a ‘long service’ volunteer – we have volunteers who have been with us for 20 years and are still active within the museum.
Our volunteers include women and men of all ages (from students to retirees). In most cases you don't need any special skills to volunteer except a willingness to learn and an enjoyment of working with other people: we provide the training where necessary. We also welcome people who have more specific skills in areas like engineering, sailing and boat maintenance, to help maintain the collection.
The support we get from the Volunteers is greatly appreciated by the museum staff. The Volunteers enjoy interacting with the museum team, and socialising as a group, and we have the added satisfaction of sharing our unique Museum experience with visitors from all over the world.
Join as a volunteer and you can also look forward to updates on the museum special activities and events, volunteer social events, concession’s on sailing trips for you and your family and the annual Christmas party.
Ready to volunteer? Simply download the application form to find out more about the volunteer roles we have to offer and complete the form. You can email your completed pdf application to email@example.com or print the application and hand it in at the NZ Maritime Museum ticket desk. We also have printed application forms at the Museum ticket desk – so we encourage you to check out the museum first and then apply as a volunteer as you depart.
